KNEE PAIN AND INJURY TREATMENT IN LANARKSHIRE.
Knee pain can be a significant setback for anyone. Whether you're going about day to day activities or someone who participates in sports, professionally or recreationally, knee pain is vital to treat correctly. Whether it's due to a long-standing issue or a recent injury, recovering fully can take time and can be challenging if not managed properly. With the right approach, however, we can help you get back on track and restore your knee to its full potential.

HOW IS THE KNEE STRUCTURED?
The knee is a complex hinge joint that connects the thigh bone (femur) to the shin bone (tibia) and is supported by the smaller bone in the lower leg, the fibula. It includes vital structures such as cartilage, ligaments, tendons, and the patella (kneecap). The knee's cartilage, including the menisci, helps cushion and stabilise the joint, while ligaments like the ACL and MCL provide support and control movement. Tendons connect the muscles to the bones, allowing for movement, and the joint's synovial fluid helps reduce friction during motion.

WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON CAUSES OF KNEE PAIN AND INJURIES?
Knee injuries are often caused by sports activities, particularly during sudden decelerations, tackles, unpredictable movements, or other forms of trauma. Some of the most common knee injuries we see include:

-
Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury
-
Posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) injury
-
Medial collateral ligament (MCL) and lateral collateral ligament (LCL) injuries
-
Knee effusion (swelling)
-
Meniscal tears
-
Patellar tendinopathy
-
Osgood-Schlatter's disease

While some more serious knee problems may require surgery, the first step is a clear diagnosis and understanding of the issue. A targeted strengthening program has proven to be highly effective in many cases. Arthritis and long-term issues can affect this weight-bearing joint, often managed with anti-inflammatory medications, injections, and painkillers. However, a dedicated strength training program to address underlying weaknesses is often the better option.

Tendon issues, like tendinopathy, require a tailored loading program and education for successful recovery. Since tendon issues can take time to heal, our rehab gym is a great resource for continuing recovery with Team MT for more complex cases.

Adolescents, especially active ones, frequently experience knee pain during growth. Early diagnosis and advice on exercise, rest, and treatment are key. We commonly treat conditions like Osgood-Schlatter’s and Sinding-Larsen-Johansson in teens, which require specific rehabilitation.

At our sports injury clinic, we regularly treat a wide variety of knee injuries from different sports and have the expertise to guide you through the best rehabilitation options.
