ANKLE PAIN AND INJURY TREATMENT IN LANARKSHIRE.

If you’ve injured your ankle—whether it’s one of the bones, tendons, or ligaments—it can make even the simplest tasks feel challenging. Ankle pain and injuries are something we see frequently and we understand how disruptive they can be to your daily life.

If you've recently injured your ankle, you might have already had it checked at the hospital and are now looking for follow-up advice and treatment. Or, perhaps seeing an experienced physiotherapist is the best next step for a thorough diagnosis and tailored rehab plan to get you back on your feet. We're here to guide you through the recovery process and ensure you're back to doing what you love as quickly and safely as possible.

HOW IS THE ANKLE STRUCTURED?

The ankle is a complex hinge joint that connects the lower leg to the foot, allowing for up-and-down movement. It consists of three main bones: the tibia (shinbone), fibula (smaller bone in the lower leg), and the talus (a foot bone).

Ligaments around the ankle provide stability, including the lateral ligaments on the outside of the ankle and the deltoid ligament on the inside. Tendons connect muscles to the bones, enabling movement, while the joint is cushioned by cartilage to reduce friction and absorb impact.

The ankle plays a crucial role in supporting body weight and allowing for walking, running, and other movements.

WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON CAUSES OF ANKLE PAIN AND INJURIES?

Ankle injuries can happen from a variety of sports and activities, and we often see a range of issues. Some of the most common concerns include:

  • Tendon injuries

  • Ankle ligament sprains (ranging from mild to more serious)

  • Fractures to the tibia, fibula, or foot bones

If you're dealing with any of these injuries, it's important to get the right treatment to ensure a full recovery.

Inversion sprains, where the ankle rolls outward and the sole of the foot moves inward, are the most common type of ankle injury. Eversion sprains, which occur when the ankle rolls inward and stretches the ligaments on the inside of the ankle, are less frequent. In more severe sprains, the syndesmosis - a group of ligamentous tissues - can also be involved, making accurate diagnosis and early treatment essential for a full recovery.

Team MT frequently treat these types of ankle injuries, as they are common across a wide range of sports and every day activity. If you’ve experienced this type of injury, we’re here to help you get back to normal function safely and efficiently.
